Is your gym really only for overweight people?

Yes. Sorry, but our gym is a place where overweight people can come get a good workout without the looks, stares and comments. Gymtimidation is real and we are here for you if you feel it.


How do I know if I qualify as “overweight”?

Excellent question! To be eligible for membership at XL Fitness, you must meet at least 2 out of 3 of these requirements:

    1. A BMI of 29 or more
    2. Body fat percentage of at least 28% for women or 25% for men.
    3. A waist measuring at least 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.

What happens if I lose weight, do I have to leave the gym?

Absolutely not!

We are not necessarily a “weight loss” gym. If your goal is to be more fit no matter what your weight is, that is great. If your goals is to lose weight, that is also great and we can help you with no matter which you prefer.

If you choose to lose weight and you no longer meet the benchmarks we set for membership, YOU CAN STAY! If you see someone who clearly does not meet those benchmarks, know that they are one of the members who’s goal was to lose weight and they achieved it. Some of them may have joined our mentorship program so talk to them, get to know your fellow members and get inspired.


I’m afraid I may be too far gone, is there hope for me?

There is always hope and you are NEVER too far gone. If you have really lost all hope then come see us anyway, we have enough HOPE to go around.

You won’t be disappointed.


I have worked with a personal trainer before and I just couldn’t keep up. I want help but I don’t want to be pushed too far. Can you help me without making me feel so sore I can’t move?

I have spent years working with people who are overweight, have injuries, and/or have mobility issues. I understand that we all have different starting points and I will design a plan that works for YOU. For some that will be high intensity workouts, for others that might be practicing standing up. I’ve never been to a gym before, can someone show me how to use the equipment?

Absolutely. Every new member gets a FREE orientation and fitness consultation. We’ll show you how to use the equipment safely and give you some basic exercises to get you started.


I’m feeling the GYMTIMIDATION, how is your gym different?

Because we are an overweight-only gym, we have already set ourselves apart from your run of the mill gym. We are laser focused on creating a healthy environment of like-minded (and like-bodied) people who are here for a lot of the same reasons. Come see for yourself, we are all in this together!


I’m not comfortable with a long-term commitment. Do I have to sign a contract with XL Fitness?

No. Although some of our members have been going to gyms for years, we realize that some are joining for the first time. We want to make your decision to join as easy as possible so we will NEVER require a contract or long-term commitment from anyone who joins our gym.


I’m concerned about the weight capacity of your equipment, will it hold more weight than my last gym?

We really did try to think of everything. Although it is difficult to get our hands on some equipment with higher weight capacities, we did accomplish this for most of our goodies.

We list weight capacities on all our equipment so you know if each machine is right for you. The suspension trainers (TRX) have a weight capacity of at least 900 pounds and our stability balls can hold at least 1000 pounds.  If you are concerned about any piece of equipment in our gym, just ask us and we’ll let you know the weight capacity.
